Green prescribing connects people with nature-based activities to improve their physical and mental health. Evidence for the most effective ‘nature based prescription’ is evolving and at the moment it can take many forms. From structured 12 week programs, to group based interventions to the simple advice from a doctor to their patient that spending time in nature has been shown to help both physical and mental health. This could be walking in a forest to reduce blood pressure, gardening to reduce stress or even placing a picture of nature by your bedside in hospital to reduce pain.
There are many green prescribing programmes underway in Wales, along with many informal opportunities to get outside and meet new people. The following list of resources can be used to help you find out what is available in your area, it may also facilitate conversations with patients about what type of nature-based activity would be most suited to them.
