Ysbyty Gwynedd Green Group

The Ysbyty Gwynedd Green Group, based at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor, was the first hospital Green Group to be established in Wales in October 2019. The Green Group was developed as part of a Bevan Commission Exemplar Project by Dr Tom Downs titled ‘Making the connections to improve environmental sustainability at our hospital’.
The group started out by connecting with staff at the hospital through engagement events and grew to become a dynamic group of clinical and non-clinical staff who care deeply the climate crisis, and its impact on the health of future generations. As well as providing learning evets across hospital departments at Ysbyty Gwynedd, the group has also advocated for several quality improvement projects to transform the approach to sustainability across the site.
Building on our local work, Green Group members Tom, Yasmina and Gwenllian took the YG Green Group to the Dragon’s Heart Institute’s Spread and Scale Academy and built a framework for spreading this work across health boards in Wales. Following this, Green Health Wales was established, and using this network the Ysbyty Gwynedd Green Group have shared their story and inspired others to establish Green Groups across Wales.
The YG Green Group continues to work towards improving sustainability at the hospital.
